Data Center
Jæren

We want to take part in the development of a sustainable data center that leaves a minimum footprint, from construction to delivering a clean cloud solution.

We will offer three types of data centers: Hyperscalers are the largest type, which facilitates companies such as Amazon, Microsoft, Google and Facebook. A medium-sized data center is what we call co-location centers, where, for example, Green Mountain can rent, to smaller players such as Lyse, banks and hospitals. And then you have smaller business data centers where global players such as car factories, Adobe and Booking.com can store data.

Data Center concept

Data Center Concept

The growth in cloud services that drive the demand for data centers needs to transform into more sustainable solutions. We believe this is best made in three steps:

  1. Clean Renewable energy
  2. A new green and effective Data Center
  3. Reuse of the waste heat

Together with Green Mountain we will develop a concept as our starting point for further discussions. The next steps are to adopt the concept with our customer demands and needs, we will be happy to show and discuss the concept in detail.

“Hele regionen har fått en historisk sjanse til å sikre arbeidsplasser og skatteinntekter i nye generasjoner. Det eneste som kan stanse oss, er om vi ikke står sammen. Det vil være håpløst om vi lot dette gå fra oss.”
“Dette blir det viktigste enkelt-vedtaket for kommunen i dette ti-året og kanskje enda lenger fram. Et datasenter på Jæren vil gi store ringvirkninger for regionen.”

AREAS
SUITABLE FOR DATA STORAGE

There are only a few places in Norway where the so-called «hyper scale» data centers can be located, namely in the immediate vicinity of a strong power supply. Statnett has just started construction of the Fagrafjell transformer station at Kalberg, and the area will be optimal for this type of industry.

Campus Highlights

Scalability

Access all the land and green energy your data center needs. Modular, standardized solutions and professional data center services make it easy to get started and scale rapidly.

Flexibility

The modular data center solutions enable you to adopt best practices, achieve demanding service levels and meet unique requirements. You have space to grow and adapt to changing needs.

Well connected

Data Center Jæren provides transatlantic and terrestrial fiber infrastructure, for low-latency and high-bandwidth connectivity to key markets. The campus is close to the European markets and oil and gas industry hubs.

Speed and Efficiency

Go to market faster. Minimize total cost with low energy costs and a combined Bulk Infrastructure data center and fiber connectivity solution.

Ideal place for
battery production

  • Europe’s lowest electricity prices, and 98 % renewable
  • Proximity to Europe, UK & US – and close to logistics (harbor, railroad, roads and airport)
  • Welcoming business climate with safe & secure conditions
  • International & technology driven business culture
  • Large land area
  • Batteries produced in Norway will fast be CO² neutral

Trend for
battery production

  • High growth for electric cars
  • The trend goes definitely towards EV but also for heavy vehicle, buses and maritime vessels
  • EU discuss to forbid fossil vessels in commercial operation when they operate in harbors
  • Europe needs to build 20 Giga factories until 2025 (20 x 32 GWh)
  • Huge demand for raw materials for battery production will make recycling of batteries important in the future
Jobs in the region

Inge Brigt Aarbakke, CEO of the Aarbakke Group, has together with several other local business leaders set up a fund of NOK 10 million.

The group wants to «exploit the industrial opportunities in the wake of a data center».

It is estimated that the data center will provide between 3,200 – 6,200 annual jobs. The number depends on several factors, such as the extent of deliveries from local businesses.

Power & Energy
supply

Power & Energy
supply

  • The primary power supply to the area currently comes from two 300 kV powerlines from Tonstad and Åna-Sira. Both are part of the national grid
  • A new 420 kV powerline from Lysebotn is under construction and will be ready for service in 2023
  • Additionally there are two 132kV lines from Lysebotn, and will be two 132 kV lines from Bjerkreim and Kjelland 300kV transformer station
  • Maximum capacity for industrial use 500MW – can be extended with Voltage upgrade
  • 50% of 1GWh from Windmills in the neighborhood

Why
Jæren?

Comparative advantages from 100 % green energy at Europe’s lowest costs

Proximity to Europe, UK & US downstream markets

Welcoming business climate with safe & secure conditions

International & technology driven business culture

About us

There are several involved in the work with the data center at Jæren. Masiv has entered into a letter of intent with landowners in Time. Lyse will supply power and internet to the center.
